Pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin, which is determined by the pigment melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. While normal pigmentation gives skin its natural tone, hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin forms dark patches or spots, and hypopigmentation happens when melanin is lost, leaving lighter areas.

Common Causes of Pigmentation:

  • Sun exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to sunspots or freckles.

  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy can trigger melasma.

  • Aging: Age spots often appear as the skin’s natural repair processes slow down.

  • Inflammation or skin injury: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur after acne, eczema, or cuts.

  • Genetics: Some people are naturally more prone to pigmentation disorders.

Main Types of Pigmentation:

  1. Melasma: Brown or gray-brown patches, often on the face, triggered by hormones and sun exposure.

  2. Freckles (Ephelides): Small, light-brown spots typically caused by sun exposure.

  3. Sunspots (Solar Lentigines): Darker, flat patches that develop on sun-exposed areas, common with aging.

  4. Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark spots that appear after skin inflammation or injury.

  5. Hypopigmentation: Light patches due to melanin loss, seen in conditions like vitiligo or after skin trauma.
