Pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin, which is determined by the pigment melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. While normal pigmentation gives skin its natural tone, hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin forms dark patches or spots, and hypopigmentation happens when melanin is lost, leaving lighter areas.
Common Causes of Pigmentation:
Sun exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to sunspots or freckles.
Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy can trigger melasma.
Aging: Age spots often appear as the skin’s natural repair processes slow down.
